From urban gardens to nearby state parks and trails, it’s easier to get out in nature near Fort Worth than you might think. Check out these nine fantastic campgrounds near Fort Worth, TX for your next outdoor adventure.
When to Visit Fort Worth, TX
Like much of Texas, spring and fall are the ideal times to visit Fort Worth. Of course, summer brings lots of warm weather activities, but with an average high of around 96 degrees in the summer, travelers might want to wait for cooler temperatures.
Spring and fall, however—especially late spring and early fall—balance the warmth of Texas with the more moderate temperatures needed to comfortably enjoy hiking and camping. Wildflower season in Texas brings plenty of springtime travelers, so photographers and nature enthusiasts should consider March or April as the ideal time to check out campgrounds near Fort Worth, TX. Of course, late September into October is also quite comfortable.
Wintertime travel in Fort Worth isn’t terribly uncomfortable, with average highs in the low 60s. However, nighttime lows get down around 38 degrees, so don’t expect south Florida winters here. Fort Worth Water Gardens
This downtown Fort Worth attraction has long been a draw for locals and tourists since it was established in 1974. This unique engineering feat is a fascinating blend of nature-inspired design that’s in keeping with the buildings near the Fort Worth Convention Center, where the gardens are situated.
While this is a great place to spend an afternoon, nighttime puts a unique twist on the design as the water gardens light up. Best of all, admission is free, so be sure to stop by if the weather is good.
Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge
Just 20 minutes from downtown, this refuge protects forests, prairies, and wetlands within its 3,600 acres. Stepping onto the grounds of the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge is a lot like stepping back in time and seeing what Fort Worth looked like years before the DFW metroplex existed.
The nature center has a variety of interactive learning opportunities, especially centered around breaks from school during the summer and Christmas seasons. Lake Mineral Wells State Park
Just under an hour west of Fort Worth is an under-appreciated gem in the Texas State Park system. This is the only state park in the Lone Star State that protects the Western Cross Timbers and Mineral Wells Trailway.
The trailway is one of the biggest draws here, too, with a 20-mile, multi-use path enjoyed by hikers, cyclists, and even horseback riders. Once a railroad bed, the path now serves as one of the best recreation opportunities in the greater Fort Worth area.
Beyond just the Mineral Wells Trailway, the park also offers campsites and screened-in shelters for visitors wanting to spend more time at the park fishing, rock climbing, or hiking.
