Bathroom Etiquette

When nature calls, please use only designated washroom buildings, outhouses, or your personal RV or portable toilet. Going to the bathroom in the area surrounding your campsite is not permitted and can have detrimental effects on the environment, water quality, wildlife, and other campers.

Outhouses are toilets not garbage cans. Garbage and recycling must be disposed of in designated bins and never in the outhouses.

Our staff clean and sanitize campground facilities multiple times a day, but campers are encouraged to bring disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer with them to the washroom or outhouse just in case.

Domestic pets are welcome in the Lowhee Campground but must always be kept on a leash and in control. Ensure that your leash length is appropriate to prevent pets from coming into contact with campers outside of your camping party. Pets are not permitted in the Barkerville Cabins. Please be considerate of other campers and pick up after your pet and dispose of their waste in the garbage.

Day use dog kennels are available for rent at the Barkerville Visitor Centre.

Wildlife and Wilderness Safety

While Barkerville may welcome thousands of visitors in a season, it is important to remember that is still a wilderness area:

  • Always communicate your travel plans with an emergency contact. Remember that there is no cell service in the Barkerville area.
  • Take extra caution in day use areas and on hiking trails to reduce risk and avoid injury.
  • Recreate within your skill level so as not to put others in emergency response, search and rescue and our health care system at risk.
  • Younger children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Wildlife attractants such as food and drinks must be securely stored in locked vehicles or RV units when campers are not present at the campsite.

Campfire rings have been placed in safe and convenient locations relative to each campsite. Please do not move your campfire rings. Do not burn garbage in your campfires.

Our interior forests are extremely dry and vulnerable to forest fires. Never leave a fire unattended. Please fully extinguish your campfires before checking-out, going to bed, or leaving your site for the day. Don't be the reason Barkerville burns to the ground.
