Contrary to what you may think, you don’t have to drive hours to find the best campgrounds near Houston. Families enjoying their time on the Gulf Coast will be happy to hear that there are plenty of great campsites within an hour of the city! Whether you’re a local looking for a retreat or a visitor planning a big trip to Texas, keep these 11 Campspots in mind.

1. St. Ives RV Resort

If you want your campground to be more than just a place to stay, St. Ives is for you. With a significant number of on-site activities for the whole family to enjoy, St. Ives is a destination on its own. Nestled nicely between Houston and Galveston, you’ll have easy access to both cities and be about an hour from the Gulf itself.

Trinity Bay is one of the most beautiful options for camping in the Houston area. The only thing that beats sunrise at Trinity Bay is its sunsets. If you want to relax without being entirely off the grid, you’ll find high-speed internet when you need it and outdoor relaxation when you’re ready to take a break.

Does the idea of driving into the city every day sound unappealing? Well, then stay near downtown Houston at Danny’s. Yes, you will be in Houston itself, but don’t let that deter you. Since you’re still in the city, you’ll be just a short drive from some of Houston’s popular spots! You’ll be within 15 minutes of great breweries (like Great Heights) or shopping opportunities at Northline Commons!

The family favorite has a location near Houston as well. You’ll have all the activities that the kids (and you, for that matter) could want in one place! Don’t want to leave to have a relaxing day on the water? Float down the Lazy River that runs right by the park!

Being in Houston itself (and near the popular Traders Village Flea Market) means later wakeup times and shorter drives to top attractions.

If you want an event and a campground in one, grab a comically large turkey leg and enjoy the bonfires, live music, and performances that the Texas Renaissance Festival offers annually.

Cullen RV resort is for you if you want quick access to the highway. If your goal is to get on the road early and easily, you’ll only need to drive three miles to head towards your destination. With just under 100 sites, you won’t feel like you’re in a massive resort, but you won’t lose out on necessities either.
