When we arrived at Gateway Campground, we were greeted by an incredibly friendly woman — unfortunately I never caught her name — and an even friendlier group of dogs, which was a pretty great way to start our stay. There had been a mix-up and the site we originally booked was occupied. Normally that might start a camping trip off on the wrong foot, but in our case it turned out to be an absolute blessing in disguise. She took the time to drive us around, show us the different available sites and let us find somewhere that worked for us. We ultimately ended up at Halfway Ledge, tucked away in the woods directly along the Medway River, and I honestly don't think we could have ended up with a better site. It was secluded, peaceful and surrounded by nature, with the river flowing right past our tent. Sitting there listening to the water with practically nobody around genuinely felt like having our own little slice of paradise. The campground definitely has more of a rustic camping feel, which we loved. Porta-potties are scattered throughout the campground, while the main bathrooms and showers are located up near the office. Cell service was pretty limited where we were, but somehow I was still using what little signal I could get to rave to friends about the place while we were there. 😂 What started with a small mix-up ended up giving us one of the nicest campsites we could have asked for, and the way it was handled says a lot about the people running the campground. We hadn't even finished our stay before we were already talking about coming back next year — except next time we're thinking a full week. Beautiful property, fantastic site, friendly people, friendly dogs and exactly the kind of place you go camping to get away from everything. We'll absolutely be back.
