Walnut Hills Campground and RV Park — Reviews

Walnut Hills Campground will not let me put a review on this site from my most recent stay from June 2 to June 9, 2025. I am putting my review here instead: I have stayed in this campground many times. Unfortunately, my last visit resulted in a very bad experience. I was staying on site #111 from 6/2/25 until 6/9/25. On 6/8, I awoke to find my camper surrounded by water. The water had pushed debris up against and under my camper. Almost everything outside on my "patio" area had been washed away. The campground employee said, "We were waiting for you to get up". In addition, the same employee said, "This is the third time this has happened". After I was able to get my camper to my RV service provider, I was informed the camper had water damage. This water damage resulted in the total loss of my camper. I was shocked, and am still grieving the loss of my camper. I took great care with it and had always felt safer in a private campground vs other options. I always thought Walnut Hills Campground would look out for me while I stayed there, but this was not the case. I still cannot believe they just watched the water rise around my camper and did absolutely nothing to try to warn me before or during this event. They could have tried to call or text to warn me, but they did not. Based on this experience on June 8, 2025, it appears Walnut Hills Campground has very serious infrastructure and procedural problems. Specifically, the drainage in and around sites 104, 105, 106 and 109 thru 117. There are creeks that will not drain properly during any level of rainfall. In addition, this water that backs up will cause road closures within the campground potentially preventing egress from some areas of the campground. They also do not have any warning system in place to warn campers of rising water. A campground employee told me it was safe to drive through some of the roads covered in water because she had driven her golf cart through it and it was, "okay". Photos attached with this review were taken after water began to recede.

Relaxing, quiet and close to blue ridge parkway for some good motorcycle riding. Good breweries.

This place is beautiful, friendly, helpful...etc... We've been here 5 days and have enjoyed it. The showers are older but very clean. I wish the laundry room was all working but we made due with the machines that were. I definitely would stay here again!

The park is beautiful, very clean with nice landscaped areas, the pool area was very nice, plenty of stuff to do movie night ect.. great kida area. Every thing worked at my site and the biggest for us is it was a quiet park. The staff i did encounter where very nice and answered any questions I had. I gave it a 4 star because the 1 and bath house in the lower area needs a upgrade... the water pressure was good and it was clean, they where working on some issues they were having.

Level site, good WiFi, country setting, convenient from interstate.

Only an overnight, but staff were friendly and efficient. Overall park appearance was very good.

The price is pretty high for what you get. The place looks old, the men's room and shower smell moldy. The electrical connections were broken so I had to use an adapter and bungee the set up around the electrical post to keep the connection.

We love Walnut Hills but there were some maintenance issues that we feel should have been rectified before the summer camping season. The laundry room had poorly working and non-working washers and dryers. The bath house showers were very difficult to control water temperature. Several decks at various sites appeared to be in rough shape (1 even appeared to be dangerous). There evidently had been recent flooding. The sites by the lake and creeks were swampy, and one of the bridges connecting the far side of the lake to the bath house had even washed away! That bridge was in the lake and was an eyesore. Another bridge over a creek appeared damaged and unsafe. There appeared to be improvements happening to some sites but those sites were not really ready for high camping season. Everything was muddy, mushy, or covered in straw. We LOVE this campground but left disappointed by the needed maintenance in mid June, esp the lack of properly working washers and dryers which were sorely needed due to the muddy, wet conditions.
